My Royal Nemesis EPISODE 2 Short Recap
“The Bodyguard, the Beast, and the Man With the King’s Face”
Episode 2 opens with Lady Kang having the kind of nightmare only a Joseon concubine with trust issues could have: the king goes from sweet‑talking her to forcing poison down her throat. She wakes up rattled, but don’t worry; she immediately channels that fear into confidence. She tells Se-gye she has a sixth sense, has survived countless assassination attempts, and therefore should obviously be his bodyguard. Se‑gye, being Se‑gye, kicks her out before she can finish her pitch.
But then Son quietly drives her home... because Se‑gye was worried. Kang, meanwhile, nearly faints from the “terrifying speed” of 20 km/h. Seoul traffic is no match for Joseon sensibilities.
Across town, Se‑gye’s grandfather Dal‑su hosts a family dinner full of fake smiles and sharper‑than‑steel chopsticks. His daughters pretend to adore him, and nephew Mun-do pretends to be the perfect grandson, though to be fair, he did donate a kidney, so Dal‑su treats him like a national treasure. Se‑gye arrives late, as usual, because he refuses to participate in their passive‑aggressive Olympics. He also learns the protesters weren’t angry at him; they were angry about unpaid wages. Son paid them off, which means someone else paid them extra to stage an assassination attempt. Suspicious.
Se‑gye orders Son to investigate Kang, convinced her sudden appearances aren’t a coincidence. But the results are shocking: Shin Seo‑ri is a complete nobody with zero shady history. Just a broke actress with a tragic résumé.
Back at Seo‑ri’s tiny apartment, Kang meets Grandma Nam Ok‑sun, who fusses over her, feeds her bland food, and gives her money she can’t afford to spare. Kang is touched; this is the first unconditional affection she’s received in centuries. Then she discovers Seo‑ri’s living conditions: paper‑thin walls, no view, and a neighbor named Baek Gwang‑nam who tries to scold her. Kang shuts him down so thoroughly the entire building applauds.
A flashback reveals Kang was bullied as a palace maid, locked in a wooden box, screaming for help. Meanwhile, Se‑gye dreams of a Joseon courtyard and a woman crying out. Coincidence? The drama says no.
Kang reads Seo‑ri’s diary and learns the truth: Seo‑ri is a former child star who let everyone walk over her, works herself to the bone, and still takes care of Grandma Ok‑sun. Kang decides she’ll live boldly for both of them. She spends her days catching perverts, scolding Gwang‑nam for stealing food, and binge‑learning Korean history on YouTube like she’s cramming for a time‑travel exam.
Elsewhere, Mun‑do gifts his doctor friend Jeong‑hyeon a plant with a hidden bug. Through it, he overhears Se‑gye ranting about Seo‑ri and his strange dream. Jeong‑hyeon suggests the universe is nudging him toward love. Se‑gye rejects the idea immediately. Mun‑do, however, wonders if Seo‑ri might be Se‑gye’s weakness.
Kang eventually runs out of money and tries, again, to get Se‑gye to hire her. He refuses, again. She borrows money from the fortune teller and rants about how ungratefshe he is. Meanwhile, the abusive period‑drama director from Episode 1 gets exposed by his assistant, who leaks Kang’s footage to highlight the mistreatment of stand‑ins. Kang goes viral. Even Biojei considers hiring her for Dynaestie. Se‑gye shuts it down instantly.
Kang spends the fortune teller's money on sweets and tries to get part‑time jobs, but her Joseon attitude and zero modern skills make her unemployable. Two weeks pass. She’s still trending. Se‑gye finally caves; he needs to hire her before someone else does. Son tries to find her, but she’s vanished.
Turns out Gwang‑nam is a part‑time extra and is helping Kang get live‑shopping gigs in exchange for her convincing the neighbors to stop hating him. Kang becomes a natural; she sells out every product she touches. Until she’s asked to promote a tonic in a bowl. The sight triggers her PTSD from the poison. She panics and runs. The director tries to hit her.
Se‑gye arrives just in time, stops the director, and suddenly becomes gentle and protective. Kang is confused. Before he can make his offer, Mun-do appears. Kang freezes because Mun‑do has the exact same face as the king who ordered her execution.
Terrified, she clings to Se‑gye and begs him to be her shield. He stands there stunned as she hugs him like her life depends on it.
And in the past, we see a masked man, who looks suspiciously like Se‑gye, rescuing young Kang from the box she was trapped in.
The plot thickens. The reincarnation web tightens. And the love triangle with two faces and one past life begins.
