Gals Can't Be Kind to Otaku!? Episode 1 Recap

The Secret Life of Takuya Seo

Takuya Seo is a typical high school freshman with a secret that he believes would make him a social outcast: he is a hardcore fan of Glittery Monpets (or Glittermon), an anime technically aimed at young girls. He describes the show as having adorable characters but a surprisingly dark and deep story, leading fans to joke that it belongs in a late-night adult time slot. Seo is convinced that "gals" the popular, fashionable girls in class would never understand or be kind to someone like him.

The Eraser Incident

The status quo is shaken when Kotoko Ijichi, a bubbly and energetic "gal" who sits in front of Seo, forgets her eraser and borrows his. The eraser is a limited-edition Glittermon item, which Ijichi mistakenly calls "Pakémon" or "Pokachu". While Seo is terrified of being judged, Ijichi is simply curious and finds the characters "hilarious".

The "Little Sister" Excuse

The dynamic shifts further when Kei Amane, a cool and model-like friend of Ijichi, joins the conversation. To Seo's shock, Amane corrects a factual error he makes about the show, proving she knows exactly when specific characters first appear. However, Amane quickly hides her knowledge by claiming her "little sister" is the real fan. This becomes a recurring theme: Amane is clearly a "closet" fan who uses her sister as a cover to talk about the show with Seo, even accepting a rare pink keychain from him under that pretense.

Unexpected Kindness

The episode reinforces its title's irony through a classroom incident. When Seo realizes he forgot his English textbook risking the wrath of a terrifying teacher nicknamed "Mafia" Ijichi notices his distress. She uses her own textbook to cover for him, sitting close enough to share while distracting the teacher. This act of kindness confuses Seo's preconceived notions about popular girls.

The Gacha Encounter

The premiere concludes with a chance meeting at a toy store. Seo finds both Amane and Ijichi looking at Glittermon figurines. While Amane continues to pretend she is shopping for her sister, the group ends up bonding over the "gacha" machines. In a stroke of beginner's luck, the non-fan Ijichi pulls a "secret" rare figure on her first try, while the dedicated fan Amane is left disappointed that she didn't get her favorite villain, Lord Vamp.

Gals Can't Be Kind to Otaku!? Episode 1 Review

Review: 8/10

This episode is a refreshing take on the "odd couple" high school trope. It successfully balances the comedy of Seo's internal panic with genuinely wholesome moments of connection.

  • What works: The "closet fan" dynamic for Amane is endearing, and the show accurately captures the specific anxiety of being into a niche hobby. The contrast between the bubbly, oblivious Ijichi and the secretive Amane creates a great trio dynamic.
  • What could improve: Some of the "otaku" internal monologues feel a bit repetitive, but they effectively establish Seo’s character.
  • Final Verdict: A must-watch for fans of "wholesome" romantic comedies or anyone who has ever had a "guilty pleasure" hobby they were afraid to share.
