Gals Can't Be Kind to Otaku!? Episode 2 Recap

A Knowledgeable "Sister"

The episode begins at school where the energetic "gal" Ijichi and the quiet otaku Seo are discussing the anime Glittery Monpets. Amane, the cool and fashionable friend of Ijichi, joins in and displays an oddly specific knowledge of the series, including details about "Episode 4" and upcoming Blu-ray releases. However, she continues to hide her passion by claiming her younger sister is the real fan who tells her everything.

The Unexpected House Guests

When Seo mentions he has a rare Blu-ray with a lost "Episode 0," Ijichi immediately suggests they go to his house after school to watch it. Seo is terrified at the thought of girls seeing his otaku-filled room and his secret fan art. Despite his protests, Amane becomes intensely interested when she hears he can draw, specifically wanting to learn how to draw her favorite character, Lord Vamp (ostensibly for her sister).

A Full-On Watch Party

To Seo’s surprise, the "gals" don't just watch the show; they dive headfirst into the full fan experience. They create fan signs and provide nonstop, expert commentary on the animation and character arcs. Seo and Amane find themselves perfectly in sync, shouting out character names at the exact same moment. For the first time, Seo feels he can be his "full otaku" self around others.

The Secret Follower

The atmosphere shifts when Amane gets physically close to Seo in the dark room, making him extremely flustered. Later, they discuss Seo’s fan art account on the social media platform "Minsta". Seo reveals his handle is "Otakky Ocean," only for Amane to stun him by revealing she is already one of his 50 followers.

Gals Can't Be Kind to Otaku!? Episode 2 Review

Rating: 8.5/10

This episode is a fantastic follow-up to the premiere. It leans heavily into the "closet fan" trope with Amane, which remains the highlight of the series. The humor comes from a genuine place—anyone who has ever been nervous about sharing their "un-cool" hobbies will find Seo's internal panic relatable.

  • The Good: The chemistry between the three leads is excellent. The "watch party" scene is a love letter to fan culture, showing that hobbies are more fun when shared.
  • The Not-So-Good: Seo’s extreme nervousness can occasionally feel a bit exaggerated, but it’s a staple of the genre.
  • Verdict: A heartwarming and funny episode that deepens the bond between the characters and sets up a great "secret connection" between Seo and Amane.
